More Than the Sum of Its Parts

Art must have been the most fascinating way of people’s expressing everything on their minds. Last Christmas, we had our own blast which I really considered one of the finest oeuvre I had with a team.

Christmas is unity – that is the main message of our Christmas decoration for me. We took a rough road accomplishing such prize. We had spent a day to think about the concept and arrived to different ideas that made us more confused. It was even harder when we started the real work because it wasn’t easy dealing with every little detail plus our funds were low so we have to utilize anything we can get from our surroundings without buying.

Everyone had their own role and we equally shared the struggles. Our hands were burned by the glue, our shirts got dirty with dyes and paints, our legs were numb, and the worst is that our eyes were really giving up because of the exhaustion. However, this was the best part for me. We still had managed to laugh and smile with each other even though our bodies are already saying no. This was because we believed that everything would soon be fine if we will just work as one and indeed, we made it successfully in the end.

One thing also that comes in my mind whenever I see our decoration, every now and then, is the resourcefulness of our group, which made me realized that celebrating Christmas is also like that. To feel the real spirit of Christmas – to enjoy and to love, does not rely on how grand or luxurious the celebration would be. We don’t need to spend much money in order to have big feasts, a simple dinner would be enough as long as we make the most time of it for having fun with our family.

Our Christmas decoration turned out to be great from magazines, newspapers, and other scraps that we’ve collected from different trash bins. We didn’t spend much but we were able to satisfy our eyes with marvelous hues and lovely patterns in the end of hardships. It was all worth it.

For me, that precious Christmas decoration sums up the essence of the real Christmas – contentment, unity, and love. It is more than the sum of its parts.
